BLOOMFIELD, Ont. – October 19, 2016 – Dan Ferguson wrapped-up his 2016 season over the past two weeks with a trio of DIRTcar Sportsman Modified races in New York and Ontario. ‘The Bloomfield Bullet’ took his newly acquired Vinyl Solution No.11 to Weedsport and Brewerton speedways during Super DIRT Week October 5-6 and took on Brockville Speedway on October 14.\
The new venture was a challenge for Ferguson, but he qualified for the main event against fields of 45 or more cars at each race.
“We were more than happy. If we had gotten flat left-rear tire, we would have had to borrow a tire. We literally had no spare parts to go with. To go and qualify, it was pretty awesome,” Ferguson said.
All three races provided a unique challenge. The top drivers in DIRTcar Sportsman racing from across the Northeast were in attendance as all three events were Sportsman Series tour races.
Ferguson took a liking to Weedsport Speedway on October 5 with a second-place time trial effort and second-place finish in his heat. He finished 18th in the 30-lap main event.
“We were fortunate at Weedsport to time trial really well. That sets you up at the front of the field and you don’t have to worry about [getting in],” Ferguson said.
At Brewerton, Ferguson was sixth fastest in his time trial group. He raced to fourth in his heat and missed a transfer spot by one spot. He made up for it by winning the Last Chance Showdown to qualify for the feature event.
“I know it’s just a B-Main, but it was pretty big. We had a let down because we missed qualifying through the heat by half a car length. To get the win the B-Main was pretty neat, especially on a track you don’t normally race at. It is neat to pick-up a win and to know you held off a lot of guys,” Ferguson explained.
Saturday’s race at Brockville was a challenge on a very slick racetrack. He qualified sixth in the first group and finished fifth in his heat, one spot shy of a transfer spot. He raced in to the show with a second-place finish in the Last Chance Showdown. A tough wreck near the end of the 50-lap main event ended his night.
“When you have to start at the back, especially on a track that’s black, passing is very minimal. The cars are all really good, competitive cars. It’s hard to pass guys when you’re all the same speed with that caliber of drivers,” Ferguson said.
A competitive string of runs and qualifying for the feature races was Ferguson’s main goal while he gets his feet wet in the Sportsman division. He accomplished that feat and hopes he can continue building on that moment with his team. Ferguson attributed much of the success he achieved to the help he received from a pair of experienced drivers.
“Tim Kerr and Jessica Power helped us out a lot to get us in the ball park to get us close without being all over the place. I consider it a success with how we did,” Ferguson concluded.
“I see it as a bunch of guys that have never had anything to do with those kind of cars and you’re racing against guys who race at these tracks weekly. I consider that a success.”
Ferguson would like to thank his entire crew, sponsors and fans who supported him all season long and in Central New York during Super DIRT Week. Stay tuned to www.danferguson11.com throughout the off-season for the latest information on the Ferguson Motorsports team.
